Katy Perry and the AFL have reportedly disagreed on the pop star’s song choice for her blockbuster show at the Grand Final.
The AFL secured the 39-year-old as its headline pre-game entertainment act in July — in news that was widely applauded by footy fans.
However, it has emerged the league and Perry’s representatives have only now settled a drama about the five songs the artist will play.

As first reported by veteran footy journalist Tom Morris, the AFL made an extraordinary request for the singer to perform only recognised hits from her back catalogue.
Perry’s camp is reported to have pushed back and wanted to perform two new songs from her controversial comeback album ‘143’, which has received mixed reviews.
She has also been criticised for working with producer Dr Luke, who engaged in a decade-long legal battle with the artist Kesha and denied accusations from her of abuse.
Morris said on SEN Breakfast on Monday the two camps reached an agreement for Perry to play just one new song.
The behind the scenes drama had AFL greats Kane Cornes and Nathan Buckley having a laugh when discussing the details of the AFL’s request.
“I love Katy Perry. I think they’ve nailed it. I think she’s going to put on a great show,” Cornes said.
He said the AFL should “surely” have had a say in Perry’s plans for the stadium show in front of 100,000 at the MCG.
“The AFL are saying, ‘We only want your hits. We only want your bangers. We only want your best stuff’,” he said on SEN.
“We want Roar, We want Teenage Dream, we want Firework. They want all the songs we know and love. And she’s pushed back and said, ‘No, no I want to play two of my new songs.
“You know when you go to a concert and maybe they’re old and all you want is their good stuff. You just want their greatest hits. That’s what the AFL have requested with the Katy Perry. And she’s gone, clearly, I want to promote some of my new music.”
Buckley pointed out that the AFL was playing with fire as soon as it landed the deal with Perry earlier this year.
“I reckon if they wanted one (a say) they should have written it into the contract,” he said to Cornes.
“It’s too late now to ask her something if it’s not written into the contract. If in fact it is, then Katy, you’re just going to have to come to the party.
“What about that? ‘We only want your bangers’. According to who? So Katy Perry has to sing what (AFL CEO) Andrew Dillon thinks is the bangers?
“She strikes me as someone who would push back. She would be a bit of trouble. You tell me to do ‘A’ and I’ll do ‘B’ kind of thing.”
In recent years, rock icons Kiss performed only three classic hits during the group’s 14 minute performance last year, while Robbie Williams in 2022 did perform one of his more recent songs as part of his set list.
According to reports, Williams’ performance cost the AFL more than $1 million for the solo performance.
Saturday will not be the first time Perry has performed at the MCG. The singer also performed at the 2020 Cricket World Cup final, played in front of 87,000 fans.
Perry earlier this year celebrated the chance to be there on AFL Grand Final day.
“I’m so excited to be back in Australia and back at the mighty MCG to perform in front of 100,000 of the best and loudest fans in the world at this year’s Toyota AFL Grand Final,” she said in a statement released by the league.
“See you in September Oi Oi Oi!”
The set list isn’t the only drama Perry has caused the AFL this week with the Brisbane Lions denied a valuable chance to train on the MCG turf before the big game.
Perry’s entertainment rehearsal is scheduled for Thursday — meaning the Lions will have to find somewhere else for their final major training session.
The club’s “captain’s run” — a light jog — will still take place on the MCG turf on Friday.
The AFL announced on Monday the full squad of entertainment acts will hold press conferences on Thursday ahead of their performances on Saturday.
Former swimmer Cody Simpson will be singing the national anthem, while Christine Anu and Mike Brady will also feature on the day.
