The Fashion News You Need To Know: January 2025

Must read

Even the most seasoned fashion aficionados might have struggled to keep up with 2024’s whirlwind news cycle. From a dramatic game of creative director musical chairs—Michael Rider taking the reins from Hedi Slimane at Celine, Matthieu Blazy succeeding Virginie Viard at Chanel, and the shocking departure of John Galliano from Maison Margiela after one of his (arguably) greatest shows—the industry kept us on our toes.

Closer to home, the unexpected exit of IMG from Australian Fashion Week sparked plenty of speculation, with promises of an exciting new iteration set to debut in 2025.

Amid all this upheaval, one thing is clear: 2025 promises to be a transformative year for fashion. We’ll be keeping a close eye on this year’s must-know movements, must-see (and shop) collaborations, and must not miss events.

But first, here’s what’s making waves in January.

One of President Joe Biden’s final acts in office was to honour the legendary American designer Ralph Lauren with the Presidential Medal of Freedom on January 4. Known as the king of prep, Lauren’s 58-year career has left an indelible mark on American fashion and culture.

Lauren began his brand in 1967 with a humble necktie collection, which has since grown into a multi-billion-dollar empire synonymous with timeless Americana. From tennis-core to the Old Money aesthetic, his designs remain as relevant as ever.

Notably, Lauren is the first fashion designer to receive this prestigious honour, joining the ranks of icons like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Maya Angelou, and Simone Biles.

Swarovski Rings In The Year Of The Snake

Heritage jewellery house Swarovski has unveiled a glittering new collection to celebrate the Year of the Snake. This launch also marks the beginning of the brand’s 130 Years of Joy celebrations and features signature swan motifs reimagined with serpentine elegance, alongside fine jewellery and crystalline figurines.

Our top pick? A gold-tone plated pendant featuring a coiled crystal snake wrapped around a Swarovski pearl. Symbolising vitality and rebirth in the Chinese zodiac, it’s already earned a spot on our lust list (and the matching earrings aren’t bad either).
