As 2024 just came to a close, it is only befitting to reflect on some of the entertainment moments that kept everyone talking.

From shocking entertainment news to remarkable occurrences, these 20 hot news moulded the year 2024 and left an indelible imprint.

  • P-Square resumes feud as Rudeboy calls out producer for alleged song theft: Popular singer and one-half of PSquare, Paul Okoye, also known as Rudeboy, has accused his twin brother and former bandmate Peter Okoye (Mr P) and his producer of ‘stealing’ his song. P recently dropped a song titled “Winning” after the group’s third breakup earlier this year. In an Instagram post, Rudeboy claimed the song was originally meant for release next year. However, to his surprise, his twin brother released it with the same producer.
  • Vybz Kartel freed after murder conviction overturned: Jamaican dancehall artist Vybz Kartel has been freed from prison after judges decided he should not face a retrial for murder. The 48-year-old, real name Adidja Palmer, was jailed in 2014 but his conviction was overturned by UK judges in March. He had been accused of killing of Clive “Lizard” Williams in Jamaica but has always maintained his innocence. Although his conviction was overturned months ago by the Privy Council in London, authorities in Jamaica had time to decide whether he should be retried.
  • Bobrisky: Nigerian celebrity arrested for abuse of naira: One of Nigeria’s best-known celebrities, a transgender woman known as Bobrisky, has been arrested on charges of abusing banknotes. Bobrisky, whose real name is Idris Okuneye, allegedly abused and mutilated banknotes during a film premiere in Lagos, the authorities told the BBC. They say she “sprayed” banknotes, meaning she threw them in the air in a sign of appreciation. “Spraying” is commonly done at Nigerian weddings and celebrations. This is technically an offence as the notes then fall to the ground where they can be trodden on. The maximum punishment is six months in jail however prosecutions are rare.
  • Equatorial Guinea sex tapes scandal involving VIPs’ wives and sisters: The ANIF officials discovered multiple CDs that documented Baltasar Engonga’s sexual relations with prominent women, such as his brother’s wife, the president’s cousin and sister, the Director General of Police’s wife, and the spouses of over 20 ministers. The footage, which was found in his personal office, was allegedly taken with consent and has since gone viral online, sparking a media uproar. Engonga’s office was the site of some of the encounters; one scene purportedly showed him having intercourse next to the flag of the country.
  • Chef Smith’s Cooking Marathon Hoax: In July, Chef Ebenezer Smith, known as Chef Smith, held a press conference to announce a record-breaking cooking marathon. However, it was later revealed that the claim was false, as he had not received official recognition from Guinness World Records. This incident led to widespread criticism of Chef Smith and the media for reporting false information.
  • Salifu Amoako’s vehicle involved in accident with 4 other vehicles: There was a vehicular accident in Accra on the eve of Christmas on Tuesday with five vehicles involved. One of the accident vehicles belongs to Bishop Salifu Amoako, whose son was recently involved in a reckless driving incident that resulted in the death of two 12-year old girls. The accident happened at the Tesano traffic light near Papaye in Accra. While the cause of the crash remains unclear, the incident resulted in considerable damage to the vehicles involved.
  • Guru wins UG SRC presidential election: Ghanaian hiplife musician Maradona Yeboah Adjei, also known as Guru, has been elected President of the University of Ghana’s Student Representative Council (SRC). Guru was announced the winner of the polls on Wednesday, 19 September, after receiving 9455 votes. His candidature for the elections was dogged by controversy prior to the polls. Guru filed a petition against the University of Ghana’s Student Representative Council (SRC) Electoral Commission following his disqualification from the presidential race. During vetting, Guru and his running mate, Jeffery Adu Yeboah, confirmed that they were not residents of any hall, resulting in their disqualification. In response, his legal team lodged a petition with the Electoral Commission and the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs, seeking a review of the decision.
  • Half of my body is paralysed now – Moesha Bodoung: Nine months after it was reported that she had suffered a stroke, Ghanaian socialite and actress, Moesha Bodoung, has spoken about her current state of health. In a recent phone interview with nkonkonsa.com, Moesha said she has not been able to walk or speak well for the past months. “I went off completely and I was in bed for several months. I couldn’t walk, I couldn’t talk and couldn’t do anything. I thank God I am better now. As you can see, I talk now even though I am still struggling to speak properly. Half of my body is paralyzed now. One of my legs and one of my hands are not functioning now. So I can’t type on phone now, I can only talk on phone”, Moesha told the blog. That notwithstanding, Moesha believes that God will fully heal her.

According to a post shared by Aba.the.great on Instagram, he is now receiving specialized care at Pantang Hospital, known for its mental health services. This development follows Funny Face’s recent outbursts, where he was seen in videos hurling insults at his baby mama and several celebrities. Fans and well-wishers are hoping for a speedy recovery as Funny Face receives treatment.

She explains that her man understands her decision not to be the normal traditional Ghanaian woman. “I don’t cook for my man; I will not come back from my busy schedule to cook for my man. I won’t do that,” she said. When asked if she would cook when she got married, she retorted, “No, I won’t cook.” Efia Odo, who led the discussion, explained that traditional women cook, clean, and iron clothes, but Gisela insisted that she would have none of that.

Back in March 2024, Drogba was diagnosed with demyelination, a condition that affects the nervous system, and has been undergoing treatment since. As he now prepares to continue his treatment abroad, he is seeking financial support from his fans and the general public. In an Instagram post shared on Wednesday, August 14, and sighted by GhanaWeekend, Drogba expressed deep gratitude to Ghana’s Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who recently visited him and offered financial support. He also thanked his friends and well-wishers for their continued contributions and encouragement.
  • Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs arrested in New York City: Embattled hip-hop mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs has been arrested in New York City on unspecified federal charges, prosecutors say. The arrest in Manhattan follows raids on two of his properties in Los Angeles and Miami in March as part of an “ongoing investigation” into sex trafficking. However, she did not disclose the exact duration of her upcoming challenge. “Here we go!!! I’m excited and ready,” she captioned.   • Former One Direction singer Liam Payne dies at 31: Liam Payne, a former member of the boyband One Direction, has died aged 31 after falling from a third-floor hotel room in Buenos Aires, police have confirmed. The singer died on Wednesday at 5pm local time. “Liam James Payne, composer and guitarist, former member of the band One Direction, died today after falling from the third floor of a hotel in Palermo,” Buenos Aires police said in a statement. Alberto Crescenti, head of the state emergency medical system, told Argentina’s Todo Noticias TV channel that Payne had fallen into an internal courtyard at the hotel.
  • Gospel artiste Yaw Mawuko commits suicide, leaves behind chilling message: A young gospel musician known as Yaw Mawuko Adjola has committed suicide. The musician left behind a heartbreaking suicide message. The suicide note making rounds on social media saw Jacob revealing he had been struggling with his demons for the past two (2) years and deemed himself a failure to his family. “I had to do it because I didn’t deserve to live. I failed woefully and nothing can solve any other mistake. I’ve been a deadman since 2022 and I have struggled my way through but as I gave my last worship in songs on earth to the Lord, I knew it was time to EXIT,” portions of his suicide note read.

In an Instagram post, Bieber shared a picture of his newborn son’s small foot. “Welcome home,” Bieber wrote in the caption in the early hours of Saturday morning, revealing his name as Jack Blues Bieber. Katy Perry and Kylie Jenner were among the famous faces who congratulated the couple.

  • Romance frauds: Hajia4Real defrauded over 40 victims off $2million: Ghanaian influencer Mona Faiz Montrage, popularly known as Hajia4Real, has been sentenced to one year and one day in prison for her role in a series of romance frauds that defrauded over 40 victims, according to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York. United States (US) District Judge J. Paul Oetken handed down the sentence on June 28, 2024, following Montrage’s guilty plea on February 21, 2024, to conspiracy to receive stolen money. US Attorney Damian Williams highlighted the severity of Montrage’s actions, stating, “Mona Faiz Montrage knowingly received illegal funds from older Americans who were victims of romance scams and now faces serious consequences for her actions.” The court revealed that from at least 2013 to 2019, Montrage was part of a West Africa-based criminal enterprise that targeted vulnerable, elderly individuals in the U.S. with romance scams.

Gridlock choked the streets of Victoria Island, with frustrated commuters and drivers stuck in traffic. Many blamed the venue choice, arguing that a larger space would have eased congestion. The event was practically earth shattering. In a phone conversation with the United Kingdom-based Pastor Tobi Adegboyega, Davido had told him, “All my friends and family are here. We have scattered Nigeria.”
