Rabat – Not a Netflix documentary but a real-time mystery that many are trying to solve, is the viral case of Egyptian woman Aya Adel.
Converging reports have said Aya Adel died on February 14, but her family suggests that the circumstances surrounding her death are not normal.
Adel’s family points fingers at the woman’s husband, Karim Khaled Hassan.
Reports said Adel fell from the seventh floor of her apartment in Amman, Jordan, where she lived with her husband and her children.
Al Jazeera reported on Saturday that preliminary forensic findings said the death resulted from the fall, but stressed that Aya Adel suffered from bodily injuries before the fall.
Her body was discovered to have been beaten badly, including a laceration on the forehead. She also suffered a skull fracture, with severe bleeding, bruises, and strong blows on her left thigh and leg.
Al Jazeera said the wounds are caused by a blunt object, such as an iron rod.
Local authorities charged the husband with assault and abuse, arresting him under an ongoing investigation.
Neighbors also testified that the victim had previously been subjected to physical abuse and torture.
An Al Jazeera report suggested that Aya Adel was planning to end her marriage, and was searching for a job. In the meantime, she had rented another house away from her husband.
“Testimonies from those close to her confirmed that at the time of the incident, she was preparing food for her children, which contradicts the husband’s claim that she had planned to commit suicide,” the report added.
Several reports alleged that Aya’s family, including her mother, received threats from her husband, who reportedly promised to harm her grandchildren if she continued to demand justice for her daughter.
Local news outlets in Egypt also published a message that the husband allegedly sent to Aya Adel before the incident. “I swear to God, if you get close to anything in the room, I’ll send you off in a body bag, and they won’t find a single intact part of you,” the alleged message reads.
Several disturbing videos of surveillance camera footage reportedly documenting the victim’s fall have gone viral.
Egyptian Independent reported on Saturday that the victim’s sister said Aya was subjected to domestic violence from her husband.
Asmaa Adel accused the husband of being physically abusive, claiming that her sister sent pictures showing bruises she sustained from the physical assault.
“Her husband used to beat and torture her, and she separated from him times ago, but she kept coming back for the sake of her sick son,” Asmaa Adel said.
She reportedly bought an apartment to live close to her mother before her death after her divorce, the sister said, noting that Aya Adel was happy that she was finally getting a divorce.
“How could she kill herself? she asked.
