The 2024 World Poker Tour World Championship at Wynn Las Vegas kicked off with a $1,000,000 guaranteed $800 buy-in no-limit hold’em event. The tournament drew 3,006 total entries across six starting flights, more than doubling the guarantee to end with a $2,089,170 prize pool.
That resulted in 371 places paid, with six-figure scores for the top four finishers. In the end, Mexico’s Sergio Soto closed out the win to secure the trophy and the top prize of $318,623. This was far and away his largest recorded tournament showing, easily surpassing the $13,254 he earned for an 11th-place finish in a $2,500 buy-in event at the Venetian DeepStack Championship Poker Series last summer.
This victory also came with 600 Card Player Player of the Year points. Soto then added another 26 points with a ninth-place finish in a $1,100 buy-in turbo event at the same series. His 626 points put him within reach of the top 1,500 in the 2024 POY race standings.
Several big names made deep runs in this event, including two-time bracelet winner Dan Heimiller (37th), bracelet winner Kathy Liebert (28th), Matt Affleck (25th), and two-time bracelet winner David Jackson (14th).
This is one of 46 events comprising the WPT World Championship schedule. The $5 million guaranteed $1,100 WPT Prime Championship is ongoing, with the $10,400 WPT World Championship main event set to kick off on Dec. 14. Check out the full schedule for the series in Card Player’s tournament database.
