National News Headlines for School Assembly

  • In a landmark judgement, Supreme Court (SC) on April 8 declares Right against adverse affects of Climate Change as a distinct fundamental and human right in the Constitution of India. SC links the right to Article 14 (Right to Equality) and Article 21 (Right to Life). Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud takes the historical decision in a three-bench judgment. 
  • Delhi High Court dismissed the plea of postponing ICAI CA Final exams which are clashing with the Lok Sabha Elections 2024.  The single judge-led bench said that there is no law that states that exams can’t be conducted during Lok Sabha Elections. He added that the mere fact that some students might face problems can’t be the reason for postponing an exam which has to be appeared by 4, 27, 000 people. The plea was filed by 27 aspirants who thought the curb on transportation and other factors might cause problems on exam days. 
  • The Supreme Court agreed to hear the plea on Intersex surgery at Birth. Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud seeks Centre’s response on the issue, had sent a notice to Centre and sought assistance from Additional Solicitor General. 
  • Supreme Court puts on hold results of board exams for Classes 5,8,9, and 11 in Karnataka. The apex court stays Karnataka High Court’s order of conducting board exams for Classes 5,8,9, and 11. The results of the exams have also been put on hold by the court. 
  • Odisha gets respite from heat as it sees slight rainfall on Monday. IMD issues Orange warning for 14 districts in Odisha. The capital likely to go hotter by the end of the week, as per IMD. Heatwave conditions and above nominal temperatures are expected in the isolated areas of South India.

  • A total solar eclipse graces skies of North America on April 8, turning day into night. Total darkening was observed across a 185-kilometre stretch between Mexico, the US, and Canada. However, it won’t be seen in India. The total solar eclipse will begin at 9:12 pm on April 8,  totality will start at 10:08 pm, and will end on April 9, 2024, at 2:22 am.
  • New Zealand makes changes to its employment visa program, thus tightening visa rules as migration records unsustainable levels. Changes include English Language requirement for low skilled jobs, minimum skills and work experience threshold for most employer work visas. The New Zealand government is now focusing on attracting and retaining highly skilled migrants.
