Roc Your Job youth employment initiative to expand thanks to state funding

Must read

The Roc Your Job initiative is expanding thanks to new funding from New York state, Monroe County Executive Adam Bello announced Monday.

Originally announced in January, the program was designed to connect 260 students from low-income households located in communities that are most impacted by crime to after-school jobs. Officials say 311 students ultimately were provided employment.

Bello’s office says $3.9 million in funding from New York state’s Youth Employment Program is now headed the now-year-long after-school program.

The initiative is a collaboration between RochesterWorks and the Monroe County Department of Human Services.

“Providing our young people with meaningful employment is one of the most effective ways we can uplift our community and keep our neighborhoods safe,” Bello said in a statement. “Every job opportunity builds skills, confidence and a path to a brighter future for our youth. By expanding Roc Your Job, we are investing in our future leaders and giving them the tools to succeed. Thank you to my DHS team, RochesterWorks and our state delegation for investing in our youth and giving them real-world experience and opportunities to succeed now and into the future.”

The county says that in order to be eligible, youth must be between ages 14-20 and live in households at or below 200% of the federal poverty level.
