Poker Achieves Global Milestone: Officially Recognized as a Mind Sport

Must read

The poker world is abuzz – finally, after years of tireless effort, our beloved game has earned the recognition it deserves! On November 16, the International Mind Sports Association (IMSA) officially welcomed poker into its ranks. That’s right, poker now sits shoulder-to-shoulder with the likes of chess, bridge, and Go – a testament to the strategic thinking, mental agility, and ice-cold composure it demands.

A Milestone Achievement Driven by Global Collaboration

This wasn’t some overnight miracle. The World Poker Federation (WPF), a global network representing 49 national poker federations across five continents, has been battling for years to shatter the stereotypes and prove that poker is not gambling. They’ve argued, debated, and presented evidence, highlighting the game’s intricate layers of strategy, psychology, and risk assessment, proving it aligns perfectly with IMSA’s criteria for mind sports.

WPF President Igor Trafane captured the emotion of the moment: “We have achieved something today that is both unprecedented and definitive,” he declared. “This recognition represents the dedication of thousands who view poker as a genuine intellectual discipline. It’s an important step in solidifying poker’s status on a global stage.”

Victory Party in Sao Paulo

The poker world celebrated this milestone in style with a star-studded bash in Sao Paulo, Brazil, coinciding with the BSOP Millions festival. Over 70 guests, including sporting legends and poker pros, participated in a relaxed and enjoyable tournament that epitomized the camaraderie and competitive spirit of the game.

Soccer legend Marcelo, the former Real Madrid and Brazilian national team superstar, graced the event, along with Tamires, captain of Brazil’s women’s national team, and her wife, the talented singer Gabi Fernandes. Tennis pro Bruno Soares, MMA fighter Anderson Berinja, and boxer Lila Furtado also joined the festivities, proving that poker’s appeal is spreading throughout the sports world. And, of course, poker stars André Akkari, Rafael Moraes, and Lauriê Tournier added their own brilliance to the occasion.

PokerStars, a major force behind this recognition, didn’t disappoint. They awarded incredible prizes to the tournament winners: an entry to the prestigious Latin America Poker Tour Main Event for the champion, a seat in the Brazilian Series of Poker Main Event for the runner-up, and an entry to the São Paulo State Poker Championship Main Event for third place. The support of industry giants like PokerStars, the BSOP, Suprema Poker, and H2 Club shows just how much this recognition means for the future of our game.

A New Dawn For Poker: Legitimacy, Growth, and Opportunity

IMSA recognition is a watershed moment, bringing a wave of benefits for the entire poker community:

  • For Players: This elevates your game! It opens doors to new career paths, more international competitions, and greater recognition for your skills and achievements.
  • For the Workforce: Get ready for a more stable and respected industry with increased job security, exciting career development, and a thriving poker ecosystem.
  • For Businesses and Sponsors: The recognition creates a more structured and attractive environment for partnerships and investments, fueling growth and innovation in the poker industry.

WPF CEO Leonardo Cavarge is already focused on the future: “Our mission now is to build the foundation that every major sport already has: standardized regulations, professional pathways, player protections, and international competitions. The World Poker Federation was built on the belief that, by joining forces, we can amplify our impact and protect the game we love.”

A Global Movement With a Vision

The WPF’s journey towards this milestone began with provisional membership granted by IMSA in December 2022. Since then, they’ve united national federations, collaborated with governments, and showcased poker’s positive economic and social impact, highlighting its potential for job creation, tax revenue, and tourism.

Their success in Colombia speaks volumes. By partnering with the Colombian Poker Federation and engaging the government, the WPF helped overturn restrictive regulations that were stifling poker’s growth. It’s a testament to the power of collective action and the positive change we can achieve through constructive dialogue and education.

The Future is Bright: Building on a Strong Foundation

Challenges remain, especially in terms of regulation and public perception. But IMSA recognition is a rock-solid foundation for poker’s future. The WPF, with its unwavering dedication and global network, is poised to lead poker into a new era of growth and recognition. With continued dedication and collaboration, the game is set to reach new heights of global success, solidifying its place as a respected and celebrated mind sport.

This is exciting news for anyone connected with poker. Let’s celebrate this victory and embrace the exciting future that awaits!
