Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate several infrastructure projects in the national capital on Friday. He is scheduled to hand over the keys of 1,675 newly constructed flats to slum dwellers, open several offices and residential complexes, and lay the foundation stones of three Delhi University projects worth over ₹600 crore.

Mr. Modi’s big-ticket announcements are expected to provide a fillip to the BJP’s campaign for the Delhi Assembly election, which is due in February this year. Sources say the PM is also likely to lead the party’s ‘Parivartan Yatra’ in the city on January 5.

The 1,675 flats at Ashok Vihar’s Swabhiman Apartments have been developed as part of an in situ rehabilitation project, similar to the one in south-east Delhi’s Kalkaji Extension that Mr. Modi inaugurated in November 2022 ahead of the municipal election that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) went on to win.

The PM will unveil two urban development projects in central Delhi and an integrated Central Board of Secondary Education office in Dwarka built at ₹300 crore.

EC announcement

The big infrastructure push assumes significance given that the Election Commission of India (EC) is scheduled to publish the updated electoral roll on January 6. Soon after, it is expected to declare the poll dates for the 70-member Assembly. It was on January 6 that the EC had announced the previous 2020 Delhi poll schedule.

The BJP, which last held the reins of the Capital in 1998 and won three and eight seats in the Assembly polls of 2015 and 2020, respectively, is yet to announce its candidates for the upcoming election even as the ruling AAP has declared its candidates on all seats and the Congress on a total of 47.
