Bali Overtourism: According to a local report by Indonesia’s state news agency Antara, Bali is mulling a two-year ban on the construction of new hotels and clubs to address the growing problem of overcrowding. This proposal, according to the report, aims to slow down the influx of tourists and preserve Bali’s natural beauty and cultural heritage, both of which are currently struggling with the growth in tourism.

Bali’s Acting Governor, Sang Made Mahendra Jaya, has proposed a two-year moratorium on new hotel and club construction in the island’s most popular tourist destinations, including Canggu, Seminyak, Uluwatu, and Ubud. The plan has been submitted to the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime and Investment Affairs, which has expressed support for the initiative.

According to reports, Governor Jaya also expressed concern about the rapid conversion of rice fields into commercial land without proper government approval. He also highlighted the negative impact of unregulated alcohol sales on public behaviour and crime rates in Bali.

Concerns about overtourism have been mounting in Bali in recent years. Its reopening after the pandemic was a significant milestone. The island’s economy surged with travellers. But with it came a surge in tourism-related development, resulting in increased traffic, pollution, and strain on local resources. Data from Indonesia’s Ministry of Tourism shows that foreign arrivals in Bali have exceeded pre-pandemic levels. This has severely affected the infrastructure and led to environmental degradation. The proposed moratorium is intended to provide a much-needed respite and allow for sustainable tourism development.

Additionally, Indonesia will be conducting an audit to revamp tourism in Bali and also enhance visitor’s experiences. The main aim, however, is to protect local culture and boost employment. The announcement was made by senior minister Luhut Pandjaitan on August 30.
