“It has been a longstanding dream of mine to organise and bring a world-class javelin competition to India,” Neeraj Chopra said. “I am sure that my fellow athletes and the fans in India will both create an experience that will be spoken about for a long time. I am excited to see how big we can make this.”
The athletics event will be the second Continental Tour meet of the year in India. The First Indian Open World Athletics Bronze Level Continental Tour will be held in Bhubaneswar on August 10.
The Continental Tour is an annual series of track and field competitions held with the backing of World Athletics and it is a part of the second tier of international one-day meetings after the Diamond League.
“World Athletics is delighted to support this new event that will allow fans in India to see their heroes on home soil and that will also showcase to the world India’s ability to stage gold standard events,” World Athletics President Lord Sebastian Coe said
India will also host their maiden Para Athletics World Championships in New Delhi in September-October and the World Para Athletics Grand Prix in March.
India are also keen on hosting the 2027 World Relays, 2028 World Junior Championships and the 2029 World Championships.
India previously hosted global athletics meets in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The country also hosted the World Half Marathon Championship in New Delhi in 2004.
