Enter the pot for a Raise

Now, with every tip you hear in online poker, none of them is a blanket statement to be applied universally. But this one is close to it. If you are the first player to enter the pot, a call is always going to be worthy of a raise. In live poker, “limping” into the pot can be the norm and almost understood. However, that is not the case online.

Raises come fast and furious and help disguise the strength of your hand. Limpers get punished and wind up compounding mistakes by wanting to see a flop. What once was cheap now becomes expensive and out of position. Two things you do not want to find yourself in. Of course, one way to avoid that is to…

Open up your Three Bet Range

The importance of raising pre-flop (or three bettings) is multiple. In short, when you three-bet pre-flop, it gives you more ways to win the pot. You can take it down to a pre-flop fold to a tighter player. Or, the more likely result is that you take down the pot post-flop with a standard, aggressive continuation bet.

An important part of the three-betting process is to open up your range. If you are known to only pop a pot with premium hands, then that will make your position even stronger when you are holding a more suspect hand, like suited connectors. It can even lead to massive pots if a player wants to look you up and hit a middling board. In small-stakes games, the position is even more important, so conversely…

Don’t call Three Bets Out of Position

This tip is especially prudent in online poker because another hand is going to come soon. It is hard to let go of hands you like and pots that you believe are yours, but in a game of numbers, it’s imperative. Even if you are more skilled than your opponent, the position is the ultimate equalizer, and being the first to act after the flop and turn is a massive hill to climb. Do not get attached to any situation that you cannot walk away from in 30 seconds…like “Heat.” Speaking of corny sayings…

Sometimes, when you set a trap, you’re the one that gets caught

This could also go under the “always try to raise” while entering a pot category. Some players like to get tricky with premium hands like AA & KK by limping in or just flatting someone else’s raise. The problem with that in a stakes game is that you do not just risk allowing others a discount to your hand that has less value played multi-way.

But mainly, there is no need to get tricky with players who are willing to pay off your standard raises anyway. You want to find the mops that call and have the goods for them. Because, you…

Don’t buff the Mops

The mops (or fish) can annoy you when they beat you in a pot, especially when they suck out on you. However, what you do not want to do is attempt to bluff at a worse player who is going to call you down because they either don’t know better or simply aren’t there to fold.

The way to make money off these types of players is to value them and bet them on death. This means don’t leave a street empty when you hold a better kicker or two pairs on a scary board. You already know not to take another player beating you personally, but even more important is to…

Be prepared for a LOT of bad beats

It is easy to allow bad beats to tilt you, which is suicide for your game and bankroll. You feel that after optimal play, you DESERVE the pot. Of course, that is not true, but even knowing that going in still doesn’t soften the blow. The importance of accepting bad beats in online poker is crucial because of the sheer more amount you will receive than a live game.

Online poker is three times faster than a live game, and that’s just for one table. So, simple math says you will be receiving at least three times the number of bad beats in a session. It is inevitable. If you enter a game knowing this and look at your game as a whole (meaning weeks and months, not days or hands), you will be emotionally equipped to weather any storm.

Now, simply run good all the time.
