Modderbee Correctional Services hosted a back-to-school fun day recently during which officials combined fitness and philanthropy to make a difference in the community.

Kwa-Thema police officers and other stakeholders also joined in on the fun.

As part of the initiative, each participant was required to donate a pair of school shoes or any school-related items to take part in the day’s activities. Some participants donated sanitary pads.

Holding some of the donated items including school shoes, trousers, socks and sanitary pads are Modderbee Correctional Services officials and stakeholders.

The event featured a 5km colour fun walk, followed by a mass aerobics session, which promoted health and wellness among officials while reinforcing the spirit of giving back to the community.

According to Olivia Mothapo, the centre’s communications officer, the collected school items will be donated to underprivileged children from a local school in the coming weeks so that learners can tackle the new academic year with confidence.

Olivia Mothapo, the centre’s communications officer said the event aimed to support underprivileged children in the community.

Molokela Mabore, special programmes manager, said: “This event is an annual initiative aimed at supporting underprivileged children by showing them that, as a department, we care for them. Instead of collecting only school shoes and sanitary towels, we decided to combine the initiative with a wellness activity, to have fun while keeping fit. As employees, maintaining good health is a priority.”
