When Mandarin Oriental opened its first property in Greece, it didn’t look to Mykonos, Santorini or any of the other glamour islands on the Aegean. Rather, the hotel is located on the chic Costa Navarino in the Messenia region of the southwest Peloponnese. The 99 suites and villas are built into the side of the hill, with green roofs that make the resort appear to blend into the landscape. While the Costa Navarino summer season is long—spanning from April through November—longtime Forbes travel contributor Ann Abel notes that the Greek summer is not: so bring a sweater.
