Two all-time greats are set to go at it mano a mano on Sunday, when Phil Galfond and Phil Hellmuth square off in a heads-up match live on Twitch.
The dream match-up was announced by BetRivers Poker, who posted, “Poker fans, it’s happening! Legends collide! Who’s your pick?”
The action will be streamed on its Twitch channel, with the start time still to be confirmed.
Galfond will be expected to have the edge heads-up after taking on all comers in his Galfond Challenge. However, as he pointed out, he’s a better PLO player and he’s giving up two cards to take on Hellmuth at no-limit hold’em.
“Heads up matches have tended to go my way, but now they’re taking away two of my cards and making me play another Phil!” Galfond posted on X.
Battle of the Phils
The VIPs (Very Important Phils) are big hitters for BetRivers Poker. Galfond stayed on as ambassador after selling his online poker site Run It Once to Rush Street Interactive in 2022. Rush Street launched BetRivers Poker in November 2024, which Galfond called a “long-standing dream.”
Hellmuth signed as a BetRivers ambassador recently and has been hitting the road over the past few weeks, signing hats and helping players win Bad Beat Jackpots.
We’d make Galfond the favorite even with just two cards, but you never know in a one-off match. The big question though is whether Hellmuth will be on his best behavior against ‘the boss’ or if he’s going to play up for the cameras in a bid to get more eyeballs on the game. One thing is certain: he won’t want to lose.
