Drinking enthusiasts test their fitness

Liqour lovers were “treated” to a fitness test at the Hazeldean Farm on Saturday when about 50 participants entered the Tenth Spring Beer Mile.

The event was organized by Hazeldean BrewingCo. and celebrated the second year of Taproom Beer Day.

The day was complimented by live music, great food, and loads of beers. Marius Botha from the Hazeldean Brewing Co. said the Spring Beer Mile and Taproom B-Day joined forces to host beer lovers at the Hazeldean Brewing Co.

He said the event was very entertaining and not easy to partake in, as part of the event is held on the farm trails, unlike other events, which are held at tracks.

“The Beer Mile is all about having fun and competing for bragging rights. Running and drinking enthusiasts alike come together to test their fitness levels and stomach capacity, in a race to consume four beers per 400 meters,” said Botha.

He said the day was all about funds, and is a celebration of the second Taproom Beer Day.

“The Beer Mile is not really known in South Africa; a lot of people have races with beer in the end.”

He said the beer mile idea derived from American culture, explaining that the mile worked as follows: “So you start by drinking a beer and run 400 meters and another beer 400 meters until you have four beers.

However, ours is different. It’s all about fun. You can drink a beer and enjoy the Hazeldean trails while walking to the next station for another beer.”

Botha said the rules only applied to serious competitors.

He said, “This Beer Mile will take you places not many people have been before; it will certainly be the toughest mile you will ever run or the most pleasant walk you will ever experience in the Hazeldean Valley Bushveld.”
