One G4S officer was shot twice during a cash-in-transit (CIT) heist at the Witpoortjie Pick n Pay this morning, February 13.
According to eyewitnesses, the G4S van drove into the parking area and officers busied themselves loading the ATM outside the Pick n Pay when they were accosted by an unknown number of armed men shortly after 08:00.
The robbers opened fire, which sent bystanders scurrying for cover.
One of the CIT officers was wounded once in the hip and once on the forehead, and the robbers fled the scene in a double cab bakkie and an Audi A3.
The officer miraculously survived the attack and was transported via ambulance to a helicopter waiting nearby, which took him to hospital for further treatment.
There is currently no indication as to the condition of the officer, although paramedics who spoke to the Roodepoort Record confirmed that the man was alive and talking while they were treating him.
Police officers at the scene informed the Record that the robbers managed to escape with an undisclosed amount of money.
