CES 2025: Nvidia grabs headlines but quirky tech doesn’t disappoint

Must read

Nvidia Corp (NASDAQ:NVDA, ETR:NVD) has grabbed the headlines during this year’s major CES 2025 technology conference, not least with its debut desktop computer.

Rivals have not let up, however, with artificial intelligence-powered TVs, fingerprint-enabled locks and even wearable solar panels among the weird and wonderful creations on show at the Las Vegas consumer technology event.

Running between Sunday at Friday, announcements so far have featured key names such as Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN), Samsung, LG and Dell.

Amazon unveiled its latest smartwatch, Amazfit Active 2, for instance, while Dell and LG revealed new brands in the form of fresh laptops and speakers respectively.

LG and Samsung have looked to usher in a new age for television-watching in the meantime, with screens incorporating AI.

Samsung’s Vision AI would feature live translation, on-screen search and AI-optimised sound and pictures, it said, similar to LG’s Microsoft Copilot-powered OLED evo lineup.

Away from television, Sony updated its Afeela car, built in partnership with Honda, was now available to pre-order – albeit only in California.

Onto the more eccentric announcements of the conference, and CES 2025 certainly hasn’t disappointed. Here are some of the highlights so far:

Anker solar-powered cloak

Dubbed “world’s first wearable solar panel,” Anker’s solar powered cloak concept could one day have you covered if you’re in the lurch for a spot to charge your phone.

The cloak sports perovskite solar cells to power a USB-C output to plug in a phone.

Roborock Saros Z70

For those who’ve ever thought their conventional vacuum was underwhelming, Roborock may well have you covered.

Featuring a robotic arm, Roborock’s Saros Z70 automatic vacuum is able to pick up litter or the likes of discarded clothes in its path as it cleans the floor.

SwitchBot’s smart lock

SwitchBot’s smart lock, featuring storage for up to 100 fingerprints, could just mean no more stress in scouring the house in search of lost keys when rushing to leave.

Halliday’s AI-powered smart glasses

In terms of wearables, Halliday’s new AI-powered glasses mark the latest step towards a potentially sci-fi-eqscue future that spectacle wearers have to look forward to.

A so-called “DigiWindow” in the top-right of the frame will allow users to be shown information directly in their field of view.

On the subject of AI, Wedbush analysts noted the theme of CES 2025 had so far been clear.

“AI-driven products on the consumer ecosystem, and in essence a new era opening up for companies around the world set to capitalize on US$2 trillion of AI capital expenditure hitting the market over the next three years.”

It’s no surprise that chip-making giant Nvidia was among these, showcasing three new announcements, including video-generating technology for training cars and robots.
