With good food and good fun during the holiday season comes great muscle loss. Fitness savants might be asking how they can stay in shape during this festive time.
Gary van Aswegen, a former rugby union player and owner of The Shed sports academy, shares some tips for staying fit during this time, whether it is on-the-go fitness or simply working off that fourth helping of Christmas dinner.
“It is important to rest, but don’t stop moving. Any form of movement is still better than nothing,” said Van Aswegen.
His advice is to try and do things you would not normally do daily, such as playing a new sport like cycling, paddling, or fly fishing. In this manner, you can break your routine while keeping your body on the move.
“A common misconception is that you need a fully stocked gym with tons of equipment to keep fit, but this is not the case,” added Van Aswegen.
You can do activities at home to keep you fit during this time. According to Van Aswegen, you can get creative with your training by hiking or trail running.
“It is important to hit short and sharp bodyweight workouts or work on your core,” explained Van Aswegen.
His third and final tip for keeping in shape this December is to keep each other accountable.
“The best way to stick to your goals is to have a training partner to ensure you work towards keeping fit, even if it is passively,” concluded Van Aswegen.
Keeping fit during the festive season can seem like a hassle, but if you work your fitness routine into your holiday time, it is possible to get results while taking it easy.
