A NETFLIX movie called EMILIA PEREZ will be a nominee for Best International Film at the Academy Awards. (It’s already won the Jury prize at the Cannes Film Festival.) EMILIA PEREZ is a bold, exciting movie that’s like nothing I’ve ever seen before. It’s a crime thriller, an intense human drama, and it’s also a stylized musical. One of the main characters is a Mexican cartel boss who believes he’s a woman and endures the surgeries it takes to make the transformation. The creative cinematography and editing of EMILIA PEREZ surprised me from start to finish. This fever dream of a movie is not for everyone, but if you have Netflix, it’s worth watching for ten or fifteen minutes to see if it’s for you. Zoe Saldana is the only actor you’re likely to recognize, and here she shows that she can also sing and dance.
