Several unemployed young people raised their concerns regarding the employment of KaNyamazane residents in the newly announced Penny Whistle and Swan streets’ development projects in Ward 20 in the township.
They said they welcome the anticipated 31 people who will be temporarily employed, but they fear those living on the streets will not be considered.
“We are concerned that the councillor and the contractors may already have their own people they would like to hire, and we have not seen any invitations to apply for these jobs. We understand the project will not span a long distance, so not a lot of people would be hired, but we really need to be considered. Otherwise, we are happy these streets will finally be constructed,” said one community member, who wished to remain anonymous for fear of discrimination.
This cry of concern came after the City of Mbombela’s executive mayor, Sibongile Makushe-Mazibuko, had led the sod-turning and handover to the contractor on Friday, November 16.

The project spans 2.7km and is valued at R42m, which includes encroachments into some residential homes. It was awarded to a Mbombela-based company, BMT Civil Construction.
The project manager, Nhlanhla Dlamini, said the construction started immediately and is expected to be finished within 10 months. “We are anticipating there being more jobs available besides the 31 we have already mentioned. The workers’ employment will be facilitated through the Expanded Public Works Programme for wage rates and other employment conditions. Additionally, as part of the contractor’s corporate social investment in this project, a community park will also be renovated to accommodate a safe and social environment for all,” he said.
Makushe-Mazibuko warned all parties involved in the project, especially community members, against intentions that might hinder its success.

“We urge the community to work closely with their ward councillor to ensure there are no delays in the construction and that the right people benefit from the project, such as those seeking employment and subcontractors who are qualified and have the necessary experience,” she said.
Ward 20’s councillor, Wandile Mazibuko, assured the community members that should any opportunities be made available, they would be informed.
