While much of the attention was focused on Nick Marchington’s main event win at the North American Poker Tour in Las Vegas, high-stakes pro Sam Soverel was busy adding yet another trophy to his collection.
The Florida native took down the $10,000 no-limit hold’em high roller earning a payout worth $385,750. His career earnings now stand at $24.4 million, which includes an astounding 33 tournament victories.
The three-day tournament saw 170 entries come through the gates to grow the prize pool to $1,649,000. The top 23 players all took home at least $19,150 in prize money. Notables that made the money included David Stamm (10th), Tyler Hirschfield (12th), Alejandro Lococo (14th), Scott Seiver (16th), Jack Hardcastle (18th), Martin Zamani (19th), Lily Kiletto (20th), and Daniel Sepiol (22nd).
Nick Seward controlled the early action at the final table by taking out Ryan Hohner in ninth place, and World Poker Tour Champions Club member and WSOP gold bracelet winner Brian Altman in eighth place. Fellow gold-bracelet winner Danny Wong then fell in seventh place before a long six-handed battle.
Soverel scored his first bustout at the final table next by sending Adam Adler packing in sixth. Seward then nabbed his third knockout punch by sending Ukraine’s Valentyn Shabelnyk home in fifth place.
David Coleman then quickly busted as Soverel scored another elimination to keep pace in the chip standings. Coleman earned $132,450 for his fourth-place finish, along with 390 Card Player Player of the Year points. It’s been a breakout year for the New Jersey native with five wins and 22 final tables. As a result he currently sits in second place in the POY race, behind Spain’s Adrian Mateos.
It was Barry Woods’ number that was called next. He exited in third place to set the heads-up final between Soverel and Seward. Thanks to back-to-back eliminations, it was Soverel who held a 3:1 advantage at the start of the final foray – and even though Seward was able to double up, Soverel never gave back that lead.
The final hand saw Soverel limp the button, and Seward checked his option before the flop fell K108. Seward then check-called a bet from Soverel. The turn brought the 6, and once again Seward check-called a bet from Soverel.
The river was the A and Seward checked yet again. Soverel then put out enough chips for an all-in confrontation. Seward tanked before calling for his tournament life with 104, but he was behind the K9 held by Soverel.
Seward took home $241,100 for the runner-up finish. The poker player from Washington D.C. now holds just shy of $2 million in career earnings.
