Inaugural Employee Sports and Cultural Meet Kicks Off at Nauni – HIMACHAL HEADLINES

Excitement filled the air at Dr. YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry in Nauni as the inaugural University Employees Sports, Games and Cultural Event began today on the university’s main campus. Students enthusiastically supported the university staff and faculty as they competed against one another in this much awaited event.

Five teams, composed of university staff from various research stations, Krishi Vigyan Kendras and colleges are taking part in the event. The teams include-College of Horticulture and the College of Forestry from the main campus, as well as teams from colleges at Neri, Thunag and the Administrative Block.

The event was inaugurated by University Vice Chancellor Prof. Rajeshwar Singh Chandel. In his opening remarks, Prof. Chandel highlighted that this was the first event of its kind in the university’s 39-year history. He emphasized the importance of promoting a health-conscious mindset among both students and staff, who often neglect their sports and hobbies due to professional commitments.

“This two-day event offers a refresher break for our employees and a chance to evaluate their fitness routines,” Prof. Chandel noted. He also commended the organizers, particularly the Office of Dean Students’ Welfare and various employee associations, for their efforts in fostering a culture of fitness and sportsmanship.

The event commenced with a march past, followed by an oath of sportsmanship administered by Dean Students’ Welfare Dr. KK Raina. Over the next two days, teams will compete in various events, including 100, 200 and 400-meter races, long jump, javelin throw and tug-of-war for both men and women. Additionally, competitions in badminton, table tennis, chess, kabaddi, volleyball, and cricket will take place, along with cultural performances featuring solo, group and folk songs. The overall winner will be determined based on combined scores from all events.

Day 1 Highlights:

In the inaugural 100 meters race for statutory officers, Dr Manish Sharma, Dean College of Horticulture took first place, followed by Vice Chancellor Prof Rajeshwar Singh Chandel and Comptroller Dhyan Singh Chauhan from the Administrative Block in second and third. In the 200 meters race for department heads, Dr. Rajneesh claimed victory with Dr. Rakesh Sharma stood a close second. Both represented the College of Horticulture. Dr. Virender Rana from Neri stood third.

In the men’s 100 meters, Lucky from the Administrative Block finished first, followed by Vikas from the College of Forestry and Dr. Sumit from Horticulture in second and third. Deepika from the College of Horticulture won the women’s 100 meters race, with Dr. Aruna and Deepika from Thunag taking second and third, respectively. In the tug-of-war competitions, the Horticulture College triumphed over the Administrative Block in the female category, while Forestry bested Neri in the men’s competition.
