Noida: Power infrastructure in the city is set to undergo development inspired by Singapore. As part of the central govt’s Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) initiative, modernisation of power infrastructure is planned for three cities — Noida, Varanasi and Kanpur.
A five-member team consisting of representatives from the Centre, the state, and Noida is set to embark on a 4-day trip to Singapore on Oct 13 to study the power infrastructure of the country.
The team includes two members from the Union energy ministry, while the other three members include one power official each from Noida, Varanasi and Kanpur.
“Continuous efforts are being made to improve the power supply system in Noida. In this sequence, the central energy ministry recently gave the green signal to the SCADA system in Noida. A budget of about Rs 1,313 crore was also approved for this. Now a team of 5 people will set off to Singapore to study the country’s power infrastructure. This study will be beneficial for better planning of the modernization work in Noida, Kanpur and Varanasi,” Harish Bansal, chief zonal engineer of the Noida power department, PVVNL, told TOI.
The study would also focus on Singapore’s growth in the energy sector over the last 50 years, transitioning from oil to natural gas for cleaner power generation and embracing sustainable solar energy.
Bansal said that, once the team returns, their observations would be noted and amendments might be made to the existing DPR to plan the electrical infrastructure in Noida along the lines of Singapore. Singapore relies on natural gas for over 95% of its electricity, which is sourced through pipelines from Malaysia and Indonesia. In addition to natural gas, the country increasingly utilizes solar energy — primarily through installations on rooftops and reservoirs.
In the first quarter of 2020, Singapore achieved its solar target of 350 megawatt-peak (MWp). Looking ahead, Singapore aims to reach a new solar target of at least 2 gigawatt-peak (GWp) by 2030, along with an energy storage deployment target of at least 200 MW beyond 2025.
