A section of the M4 westbound remains closed this morning while investigations continue into a serious crash between a car and a lorry.

Traffic was stopped on the carriageway between Hungerford (Junction 14) and Swindon (Junction 15) in the early hours of this morning.

Wiltshire Police and air ambulance are both believed to remain in attendance at the scene.

Cars at the back of the queue in Wiltshire began to be turned around just before 4am, National Highways said.

The agency has outlined a diversion route for drivers on its website.


Broken down train leads to disruption on Scottish railway

A broken down train near Uphall, a village in West Lothian, could lead to disruption for Scottish rail travellers this morning.

ScotRail has said the incident may result in services travelling from Edinburgh to Helensburgh on the west coast via Airdrie being cancelled, delayed or revised.

Update on M4 disruption

National Highways has said the westbound section of the M4 between Hungerford and Swindon in Wiltshire remains closed.

However, the reopening process appears to have moved on from police investigation to recovery, with the fuel spillage getting cleared up.

Multi-vehicle crash closes A404 in Buckinghamshire

The A404 southbound near Handy Cross in Buckinghamshire has been closed due to a crash involving multiple vehicles.

Thames Valley Police described it as a ‘serious injury’ incident on its X account.

Officers ‘envisage the road to remain closed for most of the morning’, the post said.

The affected section runs between the M40 and A4155, with drivers told to expect delays.

National Highways has suggested the following diversion:

  • From the M40 southbound, leave at the Junction 4 interchange.
  • At the roundabout, use the sixth exit and join Wycombe Road.
  • Continue for approximately two miles to a T junction with Wiltshire Road.
  • Merge with Wiltshire Road and continue to the A4155 roundabout.
  • Use the first exit and join the A4155 Little Marlow Road.
  • Continue over the next roundabout and follow to the A404 Marlow Interchange.
  • At the roundabout, use the third exit to rejoin the A404 southbound.

Delays on A1M while lorry recovered

Away from the M4, less severe delays are also reported on the A1M in Yorkshire.

One lane is closed northbound between Junction 36, near Warmsworth, and Junction 37, near Marr, in South Yorkshire.

An HGV is being recovered ‘following an earlier incident’, National Highways said – the nature of the incident is unclear at the moment.

Around three miles of congestion is expected, with 30 minutes of delays for drivers.

Details of diversion route for M4 drivers

A section of the M4 westbound in Wiltshire has been closed this morning after a serious crash between a car and a lorry.

Drivers who were planning to take the road between Hungerford and Swindon – Junction 14 and Junction 15 – have been told to use a diversion route instead.

  • Leave the M4 at Junction 14. At the roundabout, take the first exit and join the A338. 
  • Follow for approximately three miles.
  • At the A4 mini roundabout, turn right onto the A4 towards Hungerford avoiding Hungerford town centre. 
  • After a short distance to the next roundabout take the second exit into Charnham Park. 
  • Turn right onto the B4192 and follow for approximately 13 miles through Aldbourne to the A419 roundabout 
  • Take the first exit and join the A419, continue to rejoin the M4 westbound at Junction 15.
