Budget 2024 Announcements for STT, Short-term capital gains and LTCG

➤ Budget 2024 Highlights: Capital gains taxation simplified: Short-term capital gains reduced to 20%, LTCG to 12.5 percent for some assets. Unlisted bonds, debentures to attract tax on capital gains

➤ Union Budget 2024 Highlights: Securities Transaction Tax (STT) on the sale of an Option increased to 0.1 per cent from 0.0625 per cent. STT on F&O (futures and options) securities hiked by 0.02 per cent and 0.1 per cent.

➤ India Budget 2024 Highlights: The budget has removed the indexation benefit available on all immovable assets like real estate. Property sellers will now not be able to inflate their purchase price and reduce their capital gains.

Long-term capital gains (LTCG) tax on immovable properties reduced to 12.5 per cent from 20 per cent, but removed the indexation benefits to adjust for inflation.

  • Duty reduced on certain brood stocks, shrimps and fish feed to 5 per cent.
  • Duty raised on ammonium nitrate to 10 per cent and 25 per cent on non-biodegradable plastics.
  • Mobiles to get cheaper: Duty reduced to 15% on mobile phone, mobile PCBA and charger
  • Duties exempted for 25 critical minerals
  • Plastic Items to Get Costlier: Custom duty hiked on plastic products:
  • Duty on Methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) for manufacture of spandex yarn from 7.5 to 5 per cent.
  • Duty changes proposed for x-ray tubes & flat panel detectors for use in medical x-ray machines under the Phased Manufacturing Programme.

➤ 2024 Budget Highlights: Employer NPS deduction increased to 14 per cent from 10 percent

➤ Budget 2024 Highlights: A solution for NPS (Central Government employees) will be developed based on the recommendations provided by the review committee.

➤ Corporate tax rate for foreign companies reduced from 40% to 35%

➤ The rules for reopening and reassessment have been relaxed. Assessments can now be reopened beyond three years from the end of the assessment year only if the undisclosed income amounts to Rs 50 lakh or more, with a maximum period of five years from the end of the assessment year.

➤ The non-reporting of movable foreign assets, such as ESOPs, by Indian professionals working in multinational companies will no longer incur penalties, provided the value is up to Rs 20 lakh.

2024 Budget Capex outlay retained at Rs 11.1 lakh crore

➤ Union Budget 2024 Highlights: The capital expenditure outlay for infrastructure has been maintained at the interim budget target of Rs 11.1 lakh crore

➤ Budget 2024 Railway: For FY 2024-25, the government has set a record capital expenditure allocation of Rs 2,62,200 crore for the railways, with gross budgetary support amounting to Rs 2,52,200 crore for the same period.

➤ Union Budget 2024 Highlights: The fiscal deficit is projected to be 4.9% of GDP for the current fiscal year, with a target to reduce it to 4.5% by the end of next year.
